Linearisation

Linearisation of exponentials of the type:

Y=a⁢eb⁢X

The procedure starts with taking natural logs of the above

lnY=lna⁢eb⁢X

Using the addition rule for logarithms

lnY=lna+lneb⁢X

Using the power rule for logarithms

lnY=lna+b⁢X lnY=b⁢X+lna

This is of the form

y=m⁢x+c

as required.

This idea has been presented in terms of logs to base e, but can be extended to any base.

Logarithms.

Definition:

y=ax⇔logay =x

Rules for Logarithms

Log of unity

loga1=0

because a0=1

Log of the base

logaa=1

because a1=a

Cancelling of logs

alogax=x

and

logaax=x

because the exponential function and the logarithm function are inverses of each other.

Addition rule for logs

logbx+logby =logbx⁢y

because bx⁢by =bx+y

Difference rule for logs

logbx-logby =logbxy

because bx by = b x-y

Power rule for logs

a⁢logbx =logbxa

Logarithm base change rule logb(x) = logc(x) logc(b)

Logarithm base switch rule logb(c) =1logc(b)

Questions:

  1. The curve with equation y=3×2x meets the curve with equation y=15-2x+1 at the point P. Find, using algebra, the exact solution x coordinate of P.

    Solution:

    3⋅2x =15-2x+1 3⋅2x+2⋅2x =15 5⋅2x=15 2x=3 log22x=log23 x=log23 (Alternatively from 2x=3 ln2x=ln3 x⁢ln2=ln3 x=ln3ln2)
